What Three Years of BWB Has Taught Me About What Dogs Actually Need
Here's something nobody tells you about starting a pet care company: the dogs are the easy part.
The hard part? Finding humans who get it.
When I started Betches Walking Betches three years ago, I interviewed probably 50 people for our first three positions.
Most had the basics, I've seen it pretty much all - experience with dogs., availability, and reliable transportation.
But I was looking for something else; something you can't really teach.
I needed people who would text me a photo because they noticed a dog seemed quieter than usual. Who would remember that one client's dog gets spooked by skateboards and automatically cross the street. Who would stay an extra 15 minutes, unpaid, because a senior pup needed help settling down before they left.
Turns out, those people exist. But they're not usually scrolling job boards.
They're already volunteering at rescue organizations. Working at veterinary clinics. Spending their weekends fostering. They're living and breathing this world because they love it.
That's who we hire.
Every single person on our team is Small Animal CPR & First Aid Certified. Background checked. Insured. And more importantly, they chose this career intentionally.
Three years in, this is what I know for sure: you can't fake genuine love for animals. Dogs know. Owners know. And it shows up in every interaction.
When your dog's caregiver notices that your pup's drinking more water than usual and suggests a vet check, that is care.
When they remember your travel dates without being reminded and proactively check in about pet sitting coverage, that is a real relationship.
The pet care industry has a reputation problem. Too many people treating it as transactional. A walk is a walk is a walk.
But for those of us who see it differently, who understand that trust is earned through consistency and attention to detail, there's an opportunity to build something better.
That's what these three years have been about. Building a team that treats every dog like their own. Creating systems that ensure nothing gets missed. And proving that premium pet care isn't about fancy branding.
It's about showing up. Noticing. Caring. Every single day.
