The Moment I Realized I Was Building Something Bigger Than a Dog Walking Company
When I launched Betches Walking Betches almost three years ago, I honestly had no idea how much it would grow, as a business and as something that genuinely matters to the families we serve.
I started with a dream and a deep belief that pets deserved a higher standard of care, and that the people providing that care should reflect that same standard.
What I didn't fully anticipate was the kind of team I would build, and the moments that would stop me in my tracks and remind me why all of this is worth it.
One of those moments came from Taylor, one of our team members who also works as a vet technician. She was on a routine walk with a client's dog when she noticed the dog's breathing didn't seem quite right. It wasn't an obvious emergency, it was the kind of thing most people might chalk up to allergies or just a dog being a dog. But Taylor trusted her instincts and reached out to the owners. She shared what she had noticed with so much care and empathy that the owners really heard her.
They took their dog to the vet.
It turned out to be a growing tumor that was pressing on the dog's airway and making it genuinely difficult for the dog to breathe. Thankfully it was benign, but it was serious enough that the vets moved forward with surgery to remove it. The dog is doing beautifully now.
When I heard that story, something shifted for me. Because that moment wasn't something I could have trained Taylor to do. There's no checklist or onboarding process that creates that level of attentiveness and genuine care. That's just who she is. And the truth is, every single person I bring onto the BWB team is chosen because they carry that same quality. That same love for animals, that same instinct to go above and beyond, that same ability to make a family feel truly taken care of.
I think about that a lot as we approach our third year. I started this company because I believed something better was possible in pet care. What I've realized along the way is that the thing that makes BWB special has always been the people.
To every family who has trusted us with your dog, thank you. That trust means everything to us, and we never take it for granted. And to Taylor, thank you for being exactly who you are. You reminded me of exactly what we're building here.
