Boundary Setting Isn't Just For Humans. It's The Secret to Confident, Happy Dogs.

Your dog pulls on leash. Jumps on guests. Guards their food bowl. Sound familiar?

These are clear signs your dog is looking for leadership and authority, this isn't cutesie - maybe it was when they are puppies, but not that they are now fully grown.

I learned this the hard way during my first year running Betches Walking Betches. We took on a sweet lab named Rosie who seemed perfect during our meet and greet. But on walks, she transformed into a tornado of pulling, lunging, and reactivity.

Her owner was exhausted. "She's just energetic," they said with a resigned shrug.

But here's what I saw: Rosie wasn't getting the boundaries she desperately needed. No one was telling her it's okay to just walk calmly and trust the human holding the leash.

We started small and consistent and within two weeks, Rosie was a different dog. Totally relaxed and confident, and she actually started enjoying her walks instead of being ruled by every stimulus.

The transformation is called boundary setting.

Dogs thrive on structure. They feel safer when they understand the rules. When we provide clear, consistent boundaries with kindness and patience, we're not being mean. We're giving them the gift of confidence.

This applies to everything from leash manners to food aggression to separation anxiety. Dogs aren't looking for permissiveness. They're looking for a leader who cares enough to set them up for success.

At Betches Walking Betches, every team member is trained in positive reinforcement techniques and understands canine behavior. We don't just walk dogs. We help them become their best, most balanced selves.

Because boundaries aren't restrictive. They're liberating.

What's one boundary you've set with your dog that made the biggest difference? I'd love to hear your stories.
